Wireless printer setup

Connect your printer to Wi-Fi using WPS, manual setup, or the manufacturer app.

This guide explains every wireless connection method for modern printers: WPS one-button pairing, manual SSID entry from the printer panel, setup via the manufacturer mobile app, and printing from iPhone, iPad, and Android devices without installing software.

Wireless setup guideChoose your setup method below.
Before you begin

What you need before starting wireless setup.

📶

Wi-Fi network name (SSID)

Know the exact name of your Wi-Fi network. It is case-sensitive. Check the label on your router if you are unsure.

🔐

Wi-Fi password

Have the exact password ready. The printer will not connect if the password contains an error even one character off.

📡

2.4 GHz band available

Most printers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz. Confirm your router has a 2.4 GHz band active. Dual-band routers have both.

📍

Printer near router

During the initial setup, keep the printer within 6 feet of the router to ensure a strong enough signal to complete pairing.

🔌

Printer powered on

The printer must be fully booted and showing an idle or ready state on its display before starting wireless setup.

📱

Manufacturer app (optional)

HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel, and Brother iPrint are the official apps for app-based wireless setup from a phone or tablet.

Setup methods

Three ways to connect your printer to Wi-Fi.

A

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) — fastest method

WPS works when your router has a WPS button, usually on the back or side. On the printer, go to the network or wireless menu and select WPS or Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Press the WPS button on the router within 2 minutes. The printer and router will pair automatically without you entering a password. This method is supported by most HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother models released after 2010.

B

Manual wireless setup from the printer panel

On the printer display, navigate to Settings, Network, or Wi-Fi Setup. Select Wireless Setup Wizard or Manual Wi-Fi Setup. The printer will scan for available networks. Select your network name from the list. Enter your Wi-Fi password using the printer keypad or touchscreen. The printer will connect and show a confirmation. Print a network configuration page from the settings menu to confirm the connection and see the assigned IP address.

C

App-based setup from a phone or tablet

Download the official printer app for your brand: HP Smart (HP printers), Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY (Canon), Epson Smart Panel (Epson), or Brother iPrint and Scan (Brother). Open the app and select Add Printer or Set Up New Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions. The app guides you through connecting the printer to your Wi-Fi network using Bluetooth or a temporary Wi-Fi direct connection. This method is often easier than the manual panel method and works on both iOS and Android.

Mobile printing

Print from iPhone, iPad, or Android without installing drivers.

AirPrint (iPhone and iPad)

AirPrint is built into iOS and iPadOS. No app required. Open any document, photo, or webpage. Tap Share, then tap Print. Select your AirPrint-compatible printer from the list. The printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone or iPad.

AirPrint is supported on most HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother models made after 2012.

Mopria Print Service (Android)

Many Android devices include Mopria Print Service pre-installed. Go to Settings, Connected devices, Connection preferences, Printing. Enable Mopria Print Service. Open a document and use the print option in any app. Select your printer from the list.

If Mopria is not pre-installed, download it from the Google Play Store for free.

Manufacturer print apps

HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel, and Brother iPrint all support direct printing and scanning from Android and iOS devices. These apps offer additional features such as ink level monitoring, scan to cloud, and printer diagnostics.

Use the official app from your printer manufacturer for the best compatibility and feature support.

Wi-Fi Direct printing

Wi-Fi Direct lets you print from a phone without a router. The printer creates its own Wi-Fi network that your phone connects to directly. Enable Wi-Fi Direct from the printer settings menu. Connect your phone to the printer Wi-Fi network. Use the printer app to send print jobs.

Wi-Fi Direct does not require internet access. It works as a local connection between the phone and printer only.
Wireless troubleshooting

Printer not connecting to Wi-Fi? Common causes and fixes.

Connected but shows offline

The printer joined the network but the computer still shows it offline. Clear the print queue and confirm the correct default printer is selected.

Fix offline issue →

Wrong Wi-Fi band

The printer is trying to connect to a 5 GHz network. Switch to the 2.4 GHz network name on the printer panel. Most home printers only support 2.4 GHz.

Incorrect password

Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully on the printer panel. Passwords are case-sensitive. Avoid copy-paste from the router label if special characters are involved — type them manually.

Printer too far from router

Move the printer closer to the router during initial setup. Weak signal during pairing causes failures. Once connected, you can move it back gradually.
